As a child, Nelson Mandela loved to listen to elders tell the story of his people and the struggle of his ancestors against colonization. He was still a student when apartheid, a racist system that separated people based on the color of their skin, was put in place. Nelson fought against this system until he was imprisoned. Despite the many obstacles he faced, he never gave up his fight for equality. He has become a symbol of justice around the world.
